#039;m trying to catch up on fantastic four and the avengers and was wondering what issues I should read because I don't want to read them all. I was wondering if anyone out there had some recommendations on what to read in the S's, S's and S's era of either of these franchises.
Answer: I used to coll etc the avengers and have all the issues from #1 to something in the 300's or so... It was a great comic book until membership inflation took over and virtually every marvel character was made an avenger. I liked the concept of the avengers better when they had a varied, but still somewhat exclusive, membership. I think the defining story arc for the avengers was the kree-skrull war, that had it's beginning around issue #87 I think (first series) and epilogued in issue #100. It had some of the best artwork ever (by Neal adams), and an amazingly complex and involved storyline. Issue #100 turned out to be rat here weak, with substandard artwork, but involved every avenger up to that point. Another great epic, a few years later, involved the avengers as a team and iron man solo in a peripheral way, but the main star was captain marvel, engaging in an epic battle against the newly introduced thanes. It occur ed mostly in the original captain marvel comic, something like issues #19 to 25, but actually began in iron man #55, and had cross-over issues in marvel feature, marvel team-up, daredevil and the avengers. It introduced not only thanes and drag the destroyer, in their best appearances to date, but also future avengers star fox and moon dragon. It was some of Jim starlin's best work.
