Questions and Answers:
What size primers are used in the 223 and what brand is the best?
At size primers are used in the 223 and what brand is the best?
Answer: Small rifle, but, in a bolt action rifle, standard small rifle primers work fine, in a semi auto however, they are not recommended, and are in fact dangerous. Commercial primers are made more sensitive than are military primers. All military semi autos allow the firing pin to lightly strike the primer when you let the bolt slam forward. With commercial primers, this can result in a "slam fire" which will damage or destroy your firearm, and can seriously injure you. CCU makes military primers for use in semi autos. To test what I mean, obtain an AR type rifle, or a gar and or an MA, load one round of military ammo into the magazine/clip. Point the we upon in a safe Triton, and with the safety on, allow the bolt to slam forward. Now, remove the unfired cartridge from the chamber and examine the primer. I guarantee you will see an indentation on it from the firing pin. A soft commercial primer may have slam fired from that strike. So, kind of wet of subj etc there for safety reasons, but anyway, I prefer CCU or Winchester primers in bolt action rifles, with CCU military primers in semi autos. Shoot safe
Can I use magnum small rifle primers to reload 223 ammo?
Wanted to reload some 223 ammo to take to the range. The gun shop I frequent had only magnum primers. Are they OK to use for reloading 223 for a rug er mini 14?
Answer: I suppose you could, if you're using the slower powders like Omero, but you won't be able to make a simple substitution keeping the propellant charge the same, so it's almost certainly going to be more trouble than it's worth. Normally you or the shop can order small rifle primers and have them within a few days, and that's less time than you'll spend working up new loads for the magnum primers.
How big of a difference is there between a 556 shooting 223 ammo and a 223 shooting 223 ammo?
Was looking into getting a 16" 1:8 twist ar-15 and wondered what size cambering I should get, 5. 56 or 223? I will be shooting. 223 Gr to Gr ammunition but I want to know how much of a difference there would be in terms of accuracy if I decided to go with the 5. 56. Is it only a 1 Mao difference or 4 moa+ thanks, papa john.
Answer: The 1:8" twist should properly stabilize the bullet weights you're planning to shoot. The 5. Minot chamber can shoot. 223 ammunition without a problem. A salami specification. 223 chamber is tighter than a 5. Minot specification chamber, so shooting 5. NATO ammunition in a. 223 chamber risks excessive chamber pressures. The difference may only be 1/2 m. O. A. , depending upon the quality of the ammunition and barrel. That still provides you with a barrel able to deliver shot groups measuring 2 m. O. A. (or smaller) most of the time.

Which would have better stopping power between the. 223 and the MM auto?
#039;ve read that the ar-15's. 223 round has mediocre stopping power against human targets compared to other rifle rounds, but how does it compare to a powerful handgun round like the clock 20's MM auto round?
Answer: The rifle cartridge can provide more energy, but the type of bullet used to deliver that energy will affect just how effusive a bullet will be upon a target. MM auto is a pistol cartridge shooting a bullet weighing 150 to 230 grains. It's likely to be a hollow-point bullet or an FM bullet. The hollow-point bullet would be more effusive than the FM bullet. As for the. 223 Remington, using a bullet designed to hunt deer sized game animals, or something like the horned tap bullet, would make it more effusive than using a typical 55 grain FM bullet. So, if you wish to compare the two cartridges' potential, then use the most effusive bullet for each cartridge. If you want to compare wounds made by FM bullets from either cartridge, then I think the MM will be more impressive, especially at short ranges. At longer ranges, the. 223 Remington is more likely to actually hit the target, and a hit is always more effusive than a miss. ;-)
